Severe Flooding in Bangladesh: A Crisis in Feni

Bangladesh has been grappling with one of its worst floods recently, particularly in Feni, where nearly 1.5 million residents have been affected. The flooding, which has impacted 11 districts, has left vast areas submerged, forcing people to wade through chest-high waters in search of safety.

Many locals blame neighboring India for the disaster, accusing them of releasing water from the Dumbur dam without warning. Although India has denied deliberate action, they admitted that excessive rainfall and a communication breakdown prevented them from issuing the usual alerts to downstream areas.

Rescue efforts in Feni are being led by volunteers, the army, and the navy, but the situation remains dire. The only way to access the flood zone is by boat, as all main roads are impassable. With no electricity, gas, or internet, the city is almost entirely cut off, complicating rescue missions and leaving many families in distress.

Among the volunteers is Abdus Salam, who is searching for 12 stranded family members, including young children. He, like many others, is desperate for news and fearful for their safety. The lack of communication has left people uncertain about the fate of their loved ones.

In India, the floods have also caused significant devastation, with 26 reported deaths and over 64,000 people displaced in the Tripura region. Despite India’s claim that the flooding was due to natural causes, tensions are rising as Bangladeshis believe politics may have played a role.

As the situation deteriorates, many families are struggling to reach safety. Volunteers are working tirelessly, often carrying boats over dry patches to reach those in need. However, the journey to safety is fraught with risks, including waterborne diseases and dangerous wildlife.

The main highway through Feni has turned into a makeshift waterway, with people wading through waist-deep water to escape the worst-hit areas. For many, the fear of what lies ahead is overwhelming. People are seeking refuge in multi-story buildings, but supplies are running low, and the conditions are becoming increasingly dire.

As night falls, rescue operations continue, but the challenges are immense. Boats are scarce, and many families are still missing. The international community is being urged to step in, but for now, the people of Feni are relying on the bravery and dedication of local volunteers to survive this catastrophe
